PUNE, MAHARASHTRA — A 33-year-old woman lost her life in a brutal encounter with a pack of stray dogs in the Chakan industrial area during the early hours of Monday, March 16, 2026. The victim, identified as Shobha Waghmare, was walking alone on a service road adjacent to the Pune-Nashik Highway at approximately 2:00 AM when the predatory attack occurred.

Law enforcement officials from the Chakan police station confirmed that the entire incident was captured on nearby CCTV cameras. The footage reveals that Waghmare was suddenly surrounded and overwhelmed by the aggressive pack. Because the attack happened in the dead of night on a deserted stretch of road, there were no witnesses to intervene, and she tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Surveillance and Police Action

“The absence of any other people on the road at that hour meant there was no one to hear her cries for help,” a police official remarked. Following the discovery of the body, authorities have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). The surveillance footage is currently being analyzed to identify the specific pack and to determine if these same animals have been involved in previous aggressive encounters with local residents.

Community Outrage and Safety Demands

The gruesome nature of the death has reignited a fierce debate over public safety and the stray dog population in Pune’s rapidly developing outskirts. Chakan, known for its heavy industrial activity and high volume of night-shift workers, has seen a spike in reported incidents involving strays. Residents are now demanding immediate and forceful action from municipal authorities to conduct mass sterilization drives and remove dangerous packs from public thoroughfares.

This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by pedestrians on poorly lit service roads and has prompted local community leaders to call for better street lighting and increased patrolling to protect late-night commuters.
