Shimla: Heavy rainfall continued to affect several parts of Himachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours, leading to disruptions in normal life, closure of educational institutions in some areas, road blockages and a search operation after a woman was swept away by strong currents in Chamba district.
Dharamshala recorded the highest rainfall in the state with 147.1 mm of rain, while the Bhatiyat region of Chamba received 75.3 mm. In view of intense rainfall in Dalhousie, the local administration ordered the closure of all schools and educational institutions as a precautionary measure.
The downpour also triggered a landslide on National Highway-5 near Chaura in Kinnaur, blocking the key route during the night. The road closure resulted in long lines of stranded vehicles on both sides, affecting connectivity between Kinnaur and Shimla.
Meanwhile, an incident of concern was reported from Salooni in Chamba, where a woman went missing after being carried away by the strong flow of a local stream while returning home after taking her livestock for grazing. Search efforts are underway, but she has not been located so far.
Rain activity was reported across various districts, including the state capital Shimla. In Kangra, intense showers disrupted electricity supply in several areas for nearly an hour, affecting daily activities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bilaspur, Kangra, Solan and Sirmaur districts, warning of the possibility of heavy rainfall. The weather office has predicted that monsoon conditions will remain active across Himachal Pradesh until August 5.
According to the IMD forecast, most parts of the state are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall during this period, with isolated areas witnessing heavier showers. Temperatures are expected to remain near normal in rain-affected regions, while areas receiving intermittent sunshine may see a rise of around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have advised residents and travellers to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas prone to landslides and flash floods.
