Tumkur (Karnataka): Havildar Nitin Gupta of the Indian Army has etched his name in sports history by setting a new Asian record in the men’s 5 km race walk. Competing at the 24th National Junior (U20) Athletics Federation Competition 2026 in Tumkur, Karnataka, Gupta became the first Asian athlete to break the 19-minute barrier, clocking an extraordinary 18:54 minutes.

The gold-medal-winning performance not only shattered the previous record but also secured Gupta’s qualification for the upcoming U-20 Asian Championship and the World Athletics Championships. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh and trained at the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune, Gupta has shown remarkable progression; only last year, he secured a silver medal at the 2025 U18 Asian Athletics Championships with a time of 20:21.51 minutes.

A Banner Year for Army Sports

Gupta’s achievement is part of a broader surge of success for the Indian Army’s “Mission Olympics” programme in 2026. The ASI, a collaborative effort with the Sports Authority of India, has produced several international milestones this month:

  • Canoeing Milestone: Havildar Megha Pradeep, the Army’s first woman canoeist, clinched India’s first-ever international gold medal in the sport at the Canoe Sprint Asian Games Test Event in Japan.

  • Marathon Record: 28-year-old Havildar Sawan Barwal from Himachal Pradesh broke a nearly half-century-old national marathon record (48 years) during the NN Marathon in Rotterdam.

  • Boxing Success: Recently recruited women boxers from the Army secured two gold medals and one silver medal at the Asian Elite Boxing Championship in Mongolia.

Established in 2001, the ASI focuses on specific disciplines including shooting, archery, wrestling, rowing, fencing, and weightlifting. By recruiting and nurturing talent from across the country, the institute continues to serve as the backbone of India’s international athletic ambitions, consistently setting new precedents on the global stage.
