Gorakhpur Bride Seeks Divorce Three Days After Wedding, Citing Groom’s Medical Condition

Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh: A marriage in Gorakhpur ended almost as soon as it began, after a 22-year-old woman sought divorce just three days into the union, alleging that her husband disclosed on their wedding night that he was medically incapable of marital relations. Police confirmed Wednesday that both families have since reached a settlement.

The couple married on November 28, with the bride’s departure ceremony held the following day. The groom, 25, is an engineer employed at an industrial unit under GIDA and is the only son of a prosperous farming family in Sahjanwa. The match had been arranged through relatives in Beliapar, where the bride lives.

Confession Prompted Immediate Return Home

According to the woman’s legal notice, the groom admitted on the first night of marriage that he was “physically incapable,” leaving her unwilling to continue the relationship. “I cannot spend my life with a man who is physically incapable. I came to know about this on the wedding night when he told me himself,” the notice states.

The situation came to light on December 1, when the bride’s father visited her in-laws’ home for a customary post-wedding ritual. She confided in him privately, after which the family took her back to her parental home without informing the groom’s relatives.

Medical Test and Claims of Previous Marriage Trouble

On December 3, both families met at a relative’s home in Beliapar, where the bride’s family accused the groom’s side of concealing his health condition. They also claimed this was his second marriage, alleging that his previous wife left within a month for similar reasons.

With the agreement of both families, the groom was taken to a private hospital in Gorakhpur for medical evaluation. The bride’s family says the report indicated that he was medically unfit and “cannot become a father.” His father initially refused to accept the findings, triggering a dispute.

Police-Mediated Settlement Reached

The bride’s family approached Sahjanwa police seeking the return of gifts and wedding expenses. Sahjanwa SHO Mahesh Chaubey confirmed receiving the complaint and said that the matter has been resolved amicably.

Following police involvement, the groom’s family agreed to return ₹7 lakh spent on the wedding as well as all gifts exchanged during the ceremony. Both sides signed an agreement in the presence of relatives.

The bride has indicated she intends to proceed with divorce, while police say both families are cooperating and no further action is anticipated unless either side lodges a fresh complaint.
