New Delhi– India’s public transport system is on the verge of a major shift as Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the rollout of futuristic luxury electric buses designed to offer an air travel-like experience on roads.
The new buses will feature airplane-style reclining seats and onboard hostesses serving tea, coffee, packaged snacks, and fruits. Each bus will have the capacity to seat 135 passengers, combining comfort with affordability.
Despite premium facilities, the fares will be 30 percent cheaper than those of conventional diesel buses, making the service both luxurious and cost-effective.
Powered entirely by electricity, these buses will run on an advanced ‘flash charging’ system, which enables a complete recharge in just 40 seconds. Special charging stations will be set up every 40 kilometers along the routes, allowing buses to resume journeys almost instantly after a quick stop.
Initially, the service will launch on busy intercity routes, including Delhi–Jaipur, Delhi–Dehradun, and Delhi–Chandigarh. Gadkari said the broader aim is to encourage travelers to shift from private cars to greener public transport, thereby reducing congestion and urban pollution.
The project is being developed in collaboration with Tata Group, with the first manufacturing plant already operational in Karnataka. Soon, these airplane-style electric buses will hit Indian roads, marking a new era in public transport.
