Dindori: A tragic road accident claimed five lives and left one person injured after a speeding truck rammed into a group of people on a highway in Madhya Pradesh’s Dindori district in the early hours of Sunday, police officials said.
The incident took place around 1 am on the Jabalpur-Amarkantak National Highway near Kikratalaab village under the jurisdiction of Gadasarai police station. According to authorities, the victims were travelling in a pickup vehicle and had halted on the roadside after one of its tyres burst.
As the driver began repairing the puncture, several occupants stepped out of the vehicle and were standing nearby. During this time, a truck approaching at high speed ran over them, resulting in fatalities at the scene.
Police officials stated that five individuals, including the pickup driver, died instantly due to the impact, while another person sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the truck driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the crash. The driver reportedly told police that he did not notice the group in time. He has since been taken into custody, and further inquiry into the incident is underway.
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings and are examining all aspects of the case, including road safety conditions and driver negligence, as part of the ongoing investigation.
