Budgam: In a significant milestone for the horticulture sector of Jammu & Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha flagged off the first dedicated parcel train from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar in Delhi today. The new freight service is expected to play a transformative role in streamlining the transportation of apples and other produce from the region to markets across India.
This newly launched train is a key development for apple growers in the Valley, offering a reliable and faster logistics solution. By connecting local producers directly to major distribution hubs in the capital, the service is poised to reduce transportation time and costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and enhance the shelf life of perishable goods like apples — one of Kashmir’s major exports.
The Lieutenant Governor expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his commitment to the development of Jammu & Kashmir’s agricultural economy.
The move is expected to significantly benefit apple-producing districts such as Shopian, Baramulla, Anantnag, and Kupwara, where farming is a primary source of livelihood. Until now, most produce was transported by road, leading to delays and higher logistics expenses. The dedicated parcel train offers a more cost-effective and time-efficient alternative.
