New Delhi: With Republic Day festivities underway, Delhi has been placed under an extensive security blanket, with the police rolling out a high-intensity, technology-driven safety plan across the capital. More than 30,000 personnel have been deployed citywide to ensure smooth conduct of the celebrations, officials said on Monday.
The New Delhi district, which houses Kartavya Path and other high-security zones, has witnessed the highest concentration of forces, with nearly 10,000 officers stationed in the area. Authorities said multiple layers of security checks, barricading, and continuous patrolling have been put in place to prevent any untoward incident.
Senior police officials said detailed operational planning, including route inspections, mock drills and contingency exercises, was carried out in the days leading up to the event. Personnel on duty were briefed point-wise about their responsibilities and emergency response protocols.
Technology has been central to this year’s security strategy. Over 3,000 high-definition CCTV cameras, integrated with advanced video analytics and facial recognition capabilities, have been installed along the parade route and surrounding locations. Live feeds from these cameras are being monitored around the clock from more than 30 dedicated control rooms.
In addition, officers on the ground are equipped with AI-enabled smart glasses that can instantly cross-check faces against police databases. This system allows for real-time identification of wanted individuals in crowded areas, enabling swift intervention when required. Mobile surveillance vans fitted with similar technology have also been positioned at key points for rapid response.
As part of heightened vigilance, sniper teams have been deployed across numerous rooftops in New Delhi, North and Central districts, while anti-sabotage checks and route surveys were conducted extensively. Security presence has also been stepped up in markets, transport hubs, metro stations and railway terminals.
To strengthen preventive measures, the police have intensified tenant and domestic staff verification drives and held coordination meetings with neighbouring states to ensure seamless intelligence sharing.
Officials have urged citizens to strictly adhere to security instructions, avoid carrying restricted items, and reach venues well in advance. Attendees have also been advised to familiarize themselves with their assigned seating enclosures, approach roads and designated entry gates to avoid inconvenience.
The elaborate arrangements aim to provide a secure environment for citizens to witness and celebrate the nation’s 77th Republic Day in peace and pride. 🇮🇳
