Kishtwar: At least 60 people have lost their lives and more than 100 others have been injured after a devastating cloudburst triggered flash floods in the remote Chisoti village of Kishtwar district, officials confirmed. The sudden deluge struck on Thursday, sweeping away homes, community kitchens, and infrastructure in its path.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the casualties and noted that the toll could rise further as rescue operations continue. Authorities have shared photographs of the deceased with families via WhatsApp groups, helping identify 21 victims so far. Over 160 people have been rescued, though 38 remain in critical condition. Several others are believed to be trapped in the affected areas.
Two neighboring villages, Machail and Hamori, remain isolated, with hundreds stranded as rescue teams work to reach them.
NDRF Teams Mobilized
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) dispatched teams to Chisoti on Friday to support ongoing operations. Two additional teams are en route to reinforce the relief effort. Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Sharma stated that helicopters could not operate due to adverse weather conditions, forcing teams to travel by road from Udhampur.
Control Room and Helplines Established
A control room and help desk have been set up in Paddar, around 15 km from Chisoti, to assist stranded individuals and pilgrims affected by the disaster. Five officials are on duty, and several helpline numbers have been provided for families seeking information about missing persons. Authorities report that the desk has received numerous distress calls since the tragedy struck.
Survivors Describe Chaotic Moments
The survivors’ accounts paint a grim picture of the disaster. Putul, rescued from the debris, said, “The entire mountain collapsed, and we couldn’t understand what happened. Chaos broke out everywhere. I was not buried because I was standing on the rock. I still can’t find many of my family members.”
Rakesh Sharma recounted narrowly escaping while trying to protect his child: “We ate prasad at the langar. As we were crossing the street, a sudden noise erupted and debris started falling. Everyone shouted, ‘Bhaago Bhaago.’ I was pressed under debris but saved by a large piece of wood. At least 60-70 people might still be buried. The people of Kishtwar helped me with clothes and food.”
Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations, with helicopters and ground teams deployed as soon as weather conditions improve. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has promised all possible assistance to those affected by this tragic event.
