New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education has announced sweeping changes to its school curriculum, introducing a new framework for Classes 6 and 9 in line with the National Curriculum Framework. The move is aimed at transforming traditional learning methods and reducing dependence on rote memorisation.

The board has directed affiliated schools to prepare for implementation from the upcoming academic session. It will also conduct teacher training programmes to ensure effective delivery of the revised curriculum in classrooms.

At the core of the reform is a shift toward “education with understanding,” where students are encouraged to develop conceptual clarity rather than rely on memorisation-based learning.

A key highlight of the new framework is the mandatory implementation of the Three-Language Formula for Class 6 students. Under this system, students must study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages. The initiative seeks to strengthen linguistic diversity and cultural connection among students.

The board is also revising core subjects such as Science, Mathematics, and Social Science for Class 6 to make them more relevant, application-based, and aligned with contemporary educational needs.

For Class 9 students, CBSE will introduce a Two-Level System in Mathematics and Science, similar to the existing model in Class 10. Students will be able to choose between a standard level for basic understanding and an advanced level for in-depth study, depending on their academic interests and future career plans.

Officials believe this flexibility will help reduce academic pressure, especially for students who find these subjects challenging, while allowing others to pursue deeper learning where required.

The reform marks a significant step in India’s evolving education system, focusing on student-centric learning, adaptability, and skill development.
