Bhavnagar, Gujarat: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her groom-to-be in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, just hours before their wedding ceremony. Police said the accused attacked his fiancée during a heated argument over the bridal dress and money, turning the wedding day into a crime scene.
The victim, identified as Soni Himmat Rathod, was at her family home near Prabhudas Talav when her fiancé, Sajan Khagna Baraiya, reportedly forced his way in on Saturday morning. According to officials, he created a disturbance that soon escalated into violence. He allegedly struck Soni with an iron pipe and slammed her head against a wall, killing her instantly.
Family members woke up to the commotion and found Soni lying in a pool of blood while Baraiya fled the house. He is currently absconding.
Police said the couple had been in a relationship for nearly 18 months despite opposition from Soni’s family. Community elders eventually intervened, and both families agreed to the marriage. Pre-wedding rituals were completed on Friday, and the wedding was scheduled for Saturday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police R R Singhal said an argument broke out early in the morning over Panetar, the traditional bridal attire, and money. The confrontation quickly turned fatal.
Investigators revealed that Baraiya has several criminal cases registered against him, including attempt to murder, assault and robbery. The Gangajaliya police and the local crime branch have launched a search operation to trace him.
Soni’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and an FIR has been registered. Further investigation is underway at the Gangajaliya police station.
