Bengaluru: Customs officials at Kempegowda International Airport intercepted a passenger attempting to smuggle two endangered Red-Shanked Douc monkeys in checked baggage, authorities said on Friday.

The arrest occurred on December 10, according to airport Customs, though the identity of the individual has not been disclosed. The passenger had arrived on a flight from Bangkok when officials discovered the monkeys concealed in the luggage.

The Red-Shanked Douc is a critically endangered primate species, and the animals were safely rescued by authorities. The passenger is currently in custody as further investigations are underway.

Bengaluru Customs highlighted the seizure on social media, emphasizing their commitment to preventing the illegal trade of wildlife and protecting endangered species.

This incident comes amid increasing vigilance at Indian airports to curb the smuggling of exotic animals and wildlife products, in compliance with national and international conservation laws.
