New Delhi: IndiGo announced the appointment of industry veteran Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer. Walsh, the outgoing Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will succeed Pieter Elbers, who resigned from the position on March 10. The board of InterGlobe Aviation has approved the appointment, with Walsh set to formally take charge on August 3, 2026, following the completion of his term at IATA on July 31.
The leadership transition comes at a critical juncture for India’s largest airline, which has faced intensified regulatory oversight and persistent fleet-related challenges in recent months. Walsh is widely regarded as a transformative figure in global aviation, having previously served as the CEO of Aer Lingus and British Airways, as well as the first CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG). IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta stated that Walsh’s extensive experience in managing large-scale operational overhauls and navigating complex market dynamics will be instrumental as the carrier scales its international network.
As CEO, Walsh will be tasked with stabilizing IndiGo’s operations and sharpening its commercial strategy in an increasingly competitive Indian aviation market. Managing Director Rahul Bhatia emphasized that Walsh’s global perspective and focus on customer-centric models would drive the airline’s next phase of growth. Walsh expressed confidence in the airline’s foundation, noting that his immediate priorities will include enhancing operational efficiency and fostering innovation across the organization to capitalize on evolving global travel trends.
