Itanagar: An Assam Rifles personnel was injured during an unprovoked firing incident by militants at the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district. The attack occurred around 5:30 PM while security forces were overseeing strategic border fencing work near the Pangsau Pass. Officials suspect the attackers were members of the NSCN-K-YA (National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang-Yung Aung), who reportedly opened fire from the Myanmar side of the international boundary to disrupt the ongoing fencing project.
The Assam Rifles personnel on site immediately retaliated, leading to a brief but intense exchange of fire. Faced with a strong counter-response, the militants fled back into the dense forested terrain on the Myanmar side. One Assam Rifles jawan sustained injuries during the encounter and was evacuated for medical treatment. Authorities have confirmed that the personnel is currently in stable condition and out of danger.
In the aftermath of the attack, security forces have cordoned off the area near Pangsau Pass and launched extensive search operations to track any remaining militants in the vicinity. The central government has recently prioritized the fencing of the 1,643-km India-Myanmar border and the suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) to curb insurgent activities and illegal smuggling. This latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges faced by engineering wings and security forces as they work to fortify the frontier in the Northeast.
