Guwahati: The flood emergency in Assam has intensified, with the state witnessing a sharp rise in casualties and widespread inundation across several districts. Official figures released on Tuesday night showed that 21 people lost their lives within the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll from this year’s floods to 31.

According to the latest update from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have now affected more than 5.64 lakh people spread across 16 districts, as relentless rainfall continues to swell rivers and inundate residential areas.

Sivasagar emerged as the worst-affected district in terms of fatalities, accounting for 13 deaths during the day. Charaideo reported five deaths, while Golaghat recorded two and Jorhat one, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing disaster in Upper Assam.

Floodwaters have submerged villages, damaged homes, disrupted transport links and affected agricultural land in several regions. Thousands of residents have been forced to leave their homes, with many taking shelter in relief camps established by the administration.

State authorities, along with disaster response teams, continue to carry out rescue and relief operations in the affected districts. Emergency personnel are assisting stranded residents, distributing essential supplies and monitoring vulnerable locations where water levels remain high.

Officials have urged people living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation advisories wherever necessary. Continuous rainfall in parts of the state has complicated rescue efforts, while concerns remain over the possibility of further flooding if river levels continue to rise.

The administration is closely monitoring the evolving situation and has assured that relief measures will be strengthened to support affected families as the state battles one of its most challenging flood spells of the season.
