Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh): A 26-year-old Indian national from the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh has reportedly died by suicide in Chicago, sending waves of grief through the international student community. Iraganaboyina Chandu, a graduate of DePaul University, had recently completed his master’s degree and was in the midst of an intensive job search. Having previously earned his BTech from CMR College of Engineering in Hyderabad and worked as a software developer, Chandu moved to the United States with high aspirations for his professional career. However, acquaintances suggest that the prolonged period of unemployment following his studies, coupled with significant financial pressures, led to a state of deep emotional distress.
Friends and family described Chandu as a determined and generous individual who was particularly concerned about the financial well-being of his parents back in India. His father works as a security guard with a limited income, and Chandu had hoped that a stable position in the technology industry would allow him to provide much-needed support for his household and clear existing debts. The stress of these responsibilities and the uncertainty regarding his future are believed to have become overwhelming. In the wake of his passing, the Indian diaspora in the United States has rallied to support his family, launching a significant fundraising campaign to manage the logistics of this tragedy.
The fundraising initiative, led by his friend Rajesh Gurram, has set a target of approximately 120,000 dollars to assist with funeral arrangements and provide a financial cushion for the grieving parents. The estimated cost for transporting his remains back to Andhra Pradesh, which includes funeral home services, legal documentation, and international shipping, is expected to reach at least 25,000 dollars. Any additional funds collected will be directed toward helping his parents settle outstanding financial obligations. The community has responded with compassion, sharing messages of support for a young man who arrived in Chicago with the same dreams shared by thousands of international students.
The plight of the young graduate has also reached high-level political representatives in India. Andhra Pradesh politician Nara Lokesh publicly expressed his condolences and requested Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to intervene and ensure that the repatriation process is handled smoothly. The minister has since confirmed that he is in contact with the relevant authorities to expedite the transportation of the body. This tragic event has sparked renewed conversations about the mental health challenges and immense pressures faced by international students navigating competitive job markets far from home.
