New Delhi— A social media post by Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak has sparked a new wave of confrontation between the Congress and the BJP during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. Nayak posted an AI-generated video late Tuesday night showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi carrying a kettle and glasses, portraying him as a tea seller at what appears to be an international gathering. Her caption read, “Now, who did this?”
The video set off immediate backlash from the BJP, with party leaders accusing the Congress of deliberately attempting to insult the Prime Minister. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised the Congress leadership and said the party cannot accept that a Prime Minister from an OBC background rose to the nation’s top office through hard work. He accused the Congress of repeatedly mocking Modi’s early life as a tea vendor.
Poonawalla also referred to a recent incident in Bihar during the Congress’ ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra,’ where an unknown individual reached the stage and shouted offensive remarks about the Prime Minister and his mother. Calling it part of a pattern, he said the Congress has a history of targeting Modi and claimed, “People will never forgive them.”
The controversy erupted on a day when tensions were already high inside Parliament. Earlier, BJP MP Sambit Patra hit out at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Renuka Chowdhury, accusing them of eroding the dignity of the House. Patra objected to Chowdhury’s remark that those “sitting in Parliament” are “the ones who bite,” which she made while responding to questions about bringing her pet dog to Parliament premises.
The friction intensified further after Chowdhury, on December 2, called Union Minister Kiren Rijiju “nalayak” following his criticism of Opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. Chowdhury defended her comments and insisted that raising issues in Parliament is an MP’s responsibility, not a disruption.
With the AI video now at the centre of yet another heated exchange, the Winter Session continues to witness escalating confrontations between the two major national parties.
