Abhishek Banerjee Calls Attack in Bengal ‘State-Sponsored Terrorism’, Vows Not to Back Down

Kolkata: A day after being attacked during a visit to South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday described the incident as an act of “state-sponsored terrorism” and accused his political opponents of trying to silence dissent.

Banerjee was allegedly targeted on Saturday in Sonarpur when he visited the family of a reported victim of post-poll violence. During the visit, a group of people reportedly hurled stones, eggs and abuses at the TMC leader. The situation escalated as some individuals allegedly attempted to physically assault him before security personnel intervened and escorted him to safety.

In a social media post on Sunday, Banerjee said he now stood as a victim of political violence and state-sponsored terrorism. He also thanked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for expressing concern and extending support following the incident. The TMC leader further acknowledged messages of solidarity from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who condemned the attack.

“We stand united and resolute in our fight to protect the soul of India, defend its democratic institutions and uphold the values enshrined in our Constitution,” Banerjee said.

Recalling his participation in an all-party delegation under Operation Sindoor, Banerjee said he had represented India abroad and stood firmly against terrorism. He alleged that the BJP promotes a culture where supporters are celebrated while critics are targeted.

“This is the reality of today’s BJP. If you support them, you are a patriot. If you question them, you become a target. If you stand with them, you are celebrated. If you stand against them, they try to silence you,” he said.

Following the incident, Banerjee underwent medical examination at two private hospitals on Saturday night. However, he was not admitted as doctors reportedly found no major injuries.

Despite the attack, the Diamond Harbour MP asserted that he would continue speaking out and defending democratic values. He said he would rather face intimidation while standing by his principles than remain silent for personal comfort.

“Power is temporary. The will of the people is permanent. I will bow only before the people, never before the people in power,” Banerjee said.
