MUMBAI — A massive 9-foot-long crocodile caused a stir at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on Monday morning after it wandered onto the campus from the nearby Powai Lake. The reptile was first spotted by the institute’s security personnel in the early hours, who immediately cordoned off the area and contacted the state forest department.

The Powai area, which houses the IIT campus, is known for its proximity to Powai Lake, a natural habitat for several mugger crocodiles. Officials believe the reptile likely strayed from the water body under the cover of darkness.

A specialized eight-member rescue team, consisting of forest department officials and experts from the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), was dispatched to the scene. The team managed to safely capture the crocodile using standard wildlife protocols, ensuring no harm came to the animal or the campus residents.

Following the rescue, the crocodile was transported to a forest facility for a comprehensive medical examination. Officials stated that the animal remains under observation and will be released back into its natural habitat once it is declared fit by veterinary experts. This incident has prompted a reminder from local wildlife authorities for residents and campus staff to remain vigilant, as sightings in the Powai area are not uncommon given the local geography.
