Nashik: An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 struck Nashik in Maharashtra during the early hours of Thursday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor occurred at 2:37:41 am IST at a depth of 5 kilometres. The epicentre was located at 20.448° North latitude and 73.708° East longitude, the NCS said in a post on X.
“EQ of M: 3.8, On: 30/07/2026 02:37:41 IST, Lat: 20.448 N, Long: 73.708 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nashik, Maharashtra,” the agency stated.
The earthquake originated at a shallow depth of 5 km, which typically results in stronger ground shaking near the epicentre compared to deeper earthquakes.
As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and further information is awaited.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes occur at depths ranging from the Earth’s surface to about 700 kilometres below ground. They are classified as shallow (0–70 km), intermediate (70–300 km) and deep (300–700 km) earthquakes. Shallow earthquakes are generally considered more hazardous because seismic waves have a shorter distance to travel, often resulting in stronger shaking at the surface.
