New Delhi: On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, the Union government announced honours for 1,090 personnel from the police, fire services, Home Guard and Civil Defence (HG&CD), and Correctional Services, recognizing their bravery, dedication, and service to the nation.
The awards include 233 Medals for Gallantry (GM), 99 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM). Each category highlights a different facet of commitment, from acts of extraordinary courage to sustained excellence in service.
The Medal for Gallantry is among the most prestigious honours, conferred for rare or conspicuous acts of bravery in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, or apprehending criminals. Out of the 233 gallantry awards, a significant 152 were conferred upon personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, acknowledging their efforts in one of India’s most sensitive regions. Another 54 awards went to personnel combating Left Wing Extremism (LWE), three were awarded in the North-East, and 24 went to other regions across India. The recipients include 226 police officers, six from Fire Services, and one from HG&CD.
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is presented for an outstanding and distinguished service record. Of the 99 recipients this year, 89 are from Police Services, five from Fire Services, three from Civil Defence and Home Guard, and two from Correctional Services.
The Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM), awarded for valuable service marked by resourcefulness, leadership, and devotion to duty, went to 758 personnel. Among them, 635 are from Police Services, 51 from Fire Services, 41 from Civil Defence and Home Guard, and 31 from Correctional Services.
These honours collectively underscore the unwavering courage and sacrifice of personnel who risk their lives daily to safeguard citizens, maintain law and order, and uphold justice.
India will mark its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, addressing the nation in a ceremony steeped in tradition and pride.
