Sissu: Tourist movement in the picturesque Sissu valley of Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district will be halted for over a month as local authorities and community bodies move to safeguard traditional religious practices and cultural customs.
The Sissu gram panchayat has announced a complete suspension of tourism-related activities from January 20 to February 28. The decision was taken after consultations with religious institutions and community organisations, reflecting a collective resolve to ensure that sacred rituals and festivals are observed without disturbance.
Sissu, nestled in the Chandra valley, has emerged as a popular winter destination in recent years, particularly after the opening of the Atal Tunnel improved year-round access. Despite sub-zero temperatures, a steady stream of visitors has been arriving to experience snowfall and adventure sports. However, community leaders expressed concern that the increasing tourist presence could interfere with an important period of religious observance.
The ban applies to all villages under the Sissu panchayat and covers the entire area from Pagal Nullah to Ropsang, including the vicinity of the helipad. Panchayat president Rajeev clarified that no tourism-linked operations will be permitted during the restricted period. “All adventure and recreational activities will remain prohibited,” he said, listing ATV rides, hot-air ballooning, zip-lining, skiing, bungee jumping and snow-based games among the activities that will be barred.
The decision has received unanimous backing from local religious and social bodies, including the Raja Ghepan Committee, Devi Bhoti Committee, Labarang Gompa Committee, as well as women’s and youth groups. The restrictions coincide with major local festivals such as Halda and Poonha, which require a calm and disciplined environment for rituals dedicated to local deities.
The district administration has been informed of the move. Panchayat representatives have met officials in Keylong, seeking administrative support and requesting that tourist traffic not be diverted towards the Sissu helipad during the ban. Copies of the resolution have also been shared with senior district officials and the police.
Residents have appealed to tourists and tour operators to respect the community’s religious sentiments and comply with the temporary closure. Panchayat members said the measure is essential to maintaining harmony between growing tourism and the preservation of the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
