Hamirpur: A 40-year-old woman died, five days after sustaining severe injuries while resisting an attempted rape by a 14-year-old boy in a village near Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. The minor has been taken into police custody, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
According to officials, the incident occurred on November 3 when the woman was cutting grass in a field. The ninth-grade student allegedly tried to forcibly assault her. When she resisted, he attacked her with a stick and a sickle, leaving her critically injured.
Villagers reportedly found the woman lying in a pool of blood and immediately contacted the police. She was first admitted to Hamirpur Medical College before being referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Police recovered fragments of a broken pen and a scale at the crime scene. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the attack. Investigators have registered a case under applicable sections of the law, treating the assault as a premeditated attempt at sexual violence.
Authorities emphasized that the incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding women’s safety in rural areas and assured that strict legal action is being pursued against the minor under juvenile justice provisions.
The tragic event has sparked outrage among villagers, who are demanding increased vigilance and safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
