Shimla: Himachal Pradesh remains under the grip of an active southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continued rainfall across the state over the next few days. Authorities have cautioned residents and tourists against venturing into vulnerable areas as heavy showers are likely to trigger landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging in several districts.
The weather office has issued a warning for intense rainfall at isolated locations in Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Hamirpur, and Sirmaur. Officials said the prevailing weather conditions could disrupt transport services, damage roads, and affect daily life in many parts of the hill state.
The impact of the relentless rain is already being felt across Himachal. Several roads have become slippery due to continuous downpours, while falling rocks and mudslides have been reported from different stretches of highways and rural roads. Commuters have been advised to travel only if absolutely necessary and to monitor weather updates before beginning their journey.
In Shimla district, connectivity to some interior areas has been affected after overflowing streams and landslides damaged temporary infrastructure. Local authorities are assessing the situation and restoring access wherever possible.
Mandi district has also witnessed a steady rise in the water level of the Beas River following persistent rainfall. The district administration has appealed to people to stay away from riverbanks and avoid crossing overflowing streams or drains. Officials fear that sudden surges in water flow could pose a serious threat, particularly in low-lying areas.
On the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway, intermittent traffic disruptions have been reported due to debris and loose rocks falling from hillsides. Road-clearing teams have been deployed to remove obstructions and ensure safe movement of vehicles.
In another weather-related incident, a passenger travelling in a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus sustained injuries after stones dislodged from a hillside struck the vehicle, shattering one of its windows. The injured passenger was provided medical assistance, while officials urged drivers to exercise caution on vulnerable routes.
Disaster management teams, police personnel, and local administrations have been placed on alert to respond quickly to any emergency arising from the ongoing spell of rain.
The Meteorological Department has reiterated that the wet spell is expected to continue until July 12. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid landslide-prone locations, and strictly follow advisories issued by district authorities to minimise risks during the active monsoon period.
