Fresh Snowfall Disrupts Travel in Himachal Pradesh; Manali-Leh Road Closed

Shimla: Wintry conditions have tightened their grip over the higher regions of Himachal Pradesh as fresh snowfall and intense rain have led to road blockages and disrupted movement across key routes. The Manali-Leh highway, a vital connection to Ladakh, has been closed at Darcha after heavy snowfall blanketed the region, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Several areas in Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, and Mandi districts witnessed significant snowfall, with Gondhla receiving 30 cm, followed by Keylong with 15 cm, Hansa with 5 cm, and Kukumseri recording 3.2 cm. The snow accumulation has stranded vehicles and halted traffic in the upper reaches, leaving Ladakh-bound travelers waiting for clearance.

Cold Wave Intensifies Across the State

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state is currently in the grip of a cold wave, with temperatures dipping below seasonal averages. Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti recorded the lowest minimum temperature at -2.5°C, reflecting the sharp shift toward winter conditions.

Alongside snow in the higher elevations, moderate to heavy rainfall battered the mid and lower hills, further complicating travel and causing waterlogging in some areas. Since Tuesday evening, Naina Devi recorded a whopping 132.6 mm of rain, followed closely by Solan (119.6 mm), Barthin (78.6 mm), and Pachhad (78.2 mm). Other areas with significant rainfall include Malraon, Kasauli, Bilaspur, and Dharampur.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds were reported from various parts of the state, including Kangra, Palampur, Murari Devi, Shimla, and Sundernagar. Hilly tourist spots like Narkanda and Kufri also witnessed strong winds, while Tabo and Neri experienced weather disturbances affecting local mobility.

Weather Outlook and Rainfall Surplus

The Met Department has forecast light rain and snowfall in upper hill regions and isolated showers in lower areas for Wednesday and Thursday. Post this period, the weather is expected to stabilize, offering some relief to commuters and residents.

In terms of cumulative precipitation, Himachal Pradesh has received a staggering 44.2 mm of rain during the post-monsoon period (October 17), which is an excess of over 625% compared to the average 6.1 mm typically recorded during this time of year.

Travel Advisory Issued

With treacherous road conditions and reduced visibility, authorities have urged travelers to avoid high-altitude travel, particularly along the Manali-Leh highway and roads leading to Lahaul-Spiti. The administration is monitoring the situation and will reopen routes once safety is ensured.

Tourists and locals alike are advised to stay updated through official channels and weather bulletins, as sudden changes in terrain conditions remain likely in the coming days.
