Shimla: A spell of wet and wintry weather has gripped Himachal Pradesh, with temperatures dropping noticeably across the region following widespread rainfall and fresh snowfall over the past day.

According to the India Meteorological Department, daytime temperatures across most parts of the state have fallen sharply, registering a decline of 2°C to 5°C. These readings are now significantly below seasonal averages, dipping by as much as 12°C in some areas. In contrast, night temperatures have remained relatively steady, staying slightly above normal in the plains and lower hills while holding near average in higher elevations.

The Shimla Meteorological Centre reported widespread precipitation, with several regions experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall. Tourist hub Manali recorded the highest rainfall, while areas like Palampur, Jogindernagar, and Seobagh also saw substantial showers.

Higher altitude regions witnessed fresh snowfall, adding to the chill. Places such as Kalpa, Keylong, and Kukumseri were among those blanketed in snow, with some areas recording significant accumulation.

Among temperature extremes, Kalpa recorded the coldest night with the mercury touching freezing point, while Paonta Sahib remained comparatively warmer during the day. In Shimla, intermittent rain kept conditions cool, while other towns like Dharamshala and Solan also reported mild but damp weather.

The weather office noted occurrences of shallow fog in parts of Mandi and thunderstorm activity near Kufri. No incidents of hailstorms or strong winds were reported during this period.

Looking ahead, the IMD has warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph in some areas. Heavy rain and snowfall are also expected at select locations through the day.

Meteorologists have also indicated that a new spell of weather disturbance, known as a Western Disturbance, is likely to impact northwest India from March 22. This could trigger further intermittent rain and snowfall across the state in the coming days.

Authorities have urged residents, particularly those in higher altitude regions, to remain alert as changing weather conditions may disrupt travel and daily life.
