Bridge Collapse in Chamba Raises Concerns Over Infrastructure Safety Amid Landslide

Chamba: A bridge under construction in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district gave way on Tuesday morning after a landslide struck the area, officials confirmed. The incident occurred along the Holi–Kharamukha road, a key route in the remote Bharmaur region.

Fortunately, no injuries or loss of life have been reported, as the structure was not yet open for public use at the time of the collapse.

Landslide Triggers Structural Failure

According to local authorities, the partially built bridge collapsed after debris and shifting soil from a nearby slope impacted the structure. The site, located near Sinyur village, is known for its fragile terrain, which becomes especially vulnerable during periods of unstable weather.

Local MLA Janak Raj stated that officials from the concerned departments have been directed to visit the location and assess the damage. A detailed inspection is expected to determine whether geological factors, construction quality, or both contributed to the incident.

Project Aimed at Improving Connectivity

The bridge project was initiated to improve accessibility in the region, particularly for residents of Holi, an area that frequently gets cut off during the monsoon season due to landslides. Once completed, it was expected to serve as an all-weather alternative route, reducing travel disruptions.

The construction contract for the bridge was awarded in 2023, with an estimated cost of around ₹5 crore. Work had progressed significantly, and the structure was reportedly close to completion before the collapse occurred.

Videos Circulate Widely

Visuals showing the bridge giving way have been widely shared on social media, drawing attention to the challenges of infrastructure development in hilly terrains. The footage has sparked discussions about safety standards and the need for stricter monitoring in landslide-prone zones.

Focus Shifts to Safety and Accountability

While the absence of casualties comes as a relief, the incident has raised serious questions about planning and risk assessment in mountainous regions like Chamba. Experts often emphasize the importance of detailed geological surveys and adaptive engineering practices in such areas.

Authorities are expected to submit a report soon, following which further action regarding reconstruction or accountability may be taken.
