Chandigarh: In the aftermath of the fatal accident at the Surajkund International Crafts Fair, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday directed authorities to carry out a detailed safety audit of amusement rides and public installations at fairs and large gatherings across the state.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister described the incident as deeply distressing and said the government has ordered an exhaustive examination of technical clearances, fitness approvals and on-ground operational practices linked to swings and similar equipment. He said a report has been sought to ensure corrective steps are taken and such mishaps do not recur.

Saini underlined that the protection of lives remains the government’s top priority and warned that lapses in safety norms would invite strict action. He also reiterated the state’s commitment to extend full support to those affected by the tragedy.

Expressing solidarity with the family of Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who died during rescue efforts at the fair, the Chief Minister said the officer’s sacrifice would not be forgotten. He assured that the government would stand by the bereaved family and confirmed that one of the family members would be offered a government job to provide long-term financial stability.

Providing an update on the injured, Saini said that eight people had been admitted to Supreme Hospital following the incident, of whom four have since been discharged. The remaining patients continue to receive medical care under close supervision. He added that four others who were treated at BK Civil Hospital have also been released after treatment.

The Chief Minister announced that those who sustained serious injuries would receive an ex-gratia payment of ₹1 lakh each, while other injured persons would be given financial assistance in accordance with existing norms.

The directives come as authorities continue to probe the circumstances leading to the accident, with the state government signalling a tougher approach to safety compliance at public events.
