Chandigarh: Four days after the tragic death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, his family has agreed to allow a post-mortem examination, paving the way for his final rites, which are likely to take place later today.
Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch officer, was found dead at his residence in Sector 11 under what officials have described as a suicide. Since then, the process of conducting a post-mortem had been on hold as the family grappled with the loss and withheld consent for the procedure.
The breakthrough reportedly came after repeated appeals from senior Haryana government officials. Sources say the family’s change of heart followed discussions with high-ranking authorities, including Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Mishra, who visited the grieving family multiple times. State Minister Krishan Lal Panwar had also called on the family earlier in an effort to facilitate the process.
According to Kumar’s brother, Vikram Kumar, the family had been in discussion late into the evening on whether to proceed. “We will soon convey our decision in this regard,” he had said on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the hospital has received a formal request to carry out the post-mortem. A medical board is in the process of being constituted to oversee the examination, which is expected to take roughly an hour once underway.
While the exact timing of the cremation is yet to be confirmed, sources indicate it is likely to happen today, marking the final farewell to the respected officer.
The circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death remain a subject of ongoing inquiry. As the state mourns the loss of a decorated officer, attention now turns to the results of the post-mortem and the possible insights it may provide into his untimely demise.
