Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s AAP government has brought about a major transformation in Punjab’s healthcare system. This transformation focuses specifically on the health of mothers and children. The government has set a significant target of building 45 dedicated Mother and Child Care Centers (MCCCs). These centers aim to reduce maternal mortality and provide the best possible start for every child. This initiative fulfills the government’s vision of creating a ‘Rangla Punjab’ (happy Punjab), where good health is everyone’s right.
The AAP government has demonstrated tremendous speed in this work. Of the target of 45 MCCCs, more than 35 have already been commissioned. This shows how serious the government is about completing the work on time and ensuring the well-being of the people. These are not just new buildings, but centers of excellent treatment. They have been thoughtfully located in villages and small towns. For example, the Budhlada center in Mansa was built with complete transparency at a cost of ₹5.10 crore, demonstrating that government funds are being spent appropriately and effectively.
Each MCCC is designed to provide the best possible care for both mother and child. These services include safe delivery, comprehensive pre- and postnatal care, newborn care, and specialized monitoring of at-risk mothers. These centers are located in areas with poor health conditions, such as high rates of anemia. With the advent of MCCCs, people no longer have to travel to expensive private hospitals or distant cities. This brings treatment directly to villages and the poor.
Alongside MCCCs, the government has also established a network of “Aam Aadmi Clinics” (AACs), which bring basic healthcare closer to home. There are over 800 AACs operating in the state, offering 80 types of free medicines and 41 free tests. This is a dual system: AACs handle minor treatments, while MCCCs are dedicated to major and specialized care. Recently, free testing and care for pregnant women has been introduced in AACs, reducing unnecessary burden on MCCCs and ensuring that the right patients receive the right treatment.
The government doesn’t stop at building buildings; it also ensures that quality and accountability are maintained in services. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann himself visits hospitals from time to time. This direct intervention ensures that issues such as staff shortages (such as nurses or sanitation workers) are immediately identified and addressed. This ensures that the money invested (e.g., ₹5.10 crore) translates into a fully functional, 24-hour service system. This government move clearly demonstrates that while building hospitals is crucial, their proper functioning is even more crucial.
This approach to building and running MCCCs also demonstrates the Punjab government’s good governance and efficient use of funds. Government funds are being invested transparently in projects that directly benefit public health and social welfare. This investment in health infrastructure will be beneficial for the state’s economy in the long run, as healthy people are able to work more efficiently. The government is also working to expedite the completion of the remaining MCCCs so that this robust network of 45 centers can fully protect the health of mothers and children across Punjab.
The Punjab government’s promise of 45 MCCCs is not just a health plan, but an initiative to transform society. The AAP government’s strong will, swift action, and excellent coordination between early and specialized care have created a model that is an example for other states in the country. This progress clearly shows that Punjab is fulfilling its dream of becoming a healthy, strong and universally accessible healthcare state, ensuring a safe and bright future for every mother and child in the state.
