Chandigarh: Punjab Government’s Local Government Minister Sanjeev Arora announced the launch of the Bhagwant Mann government’s ambitious World-Class Streets Project in Ludhiana. The ₹162-crore initiative aims to transform 15 kilometres of key city roads into safe, inclusive, sustainable, and smart streets. The project follows the Complete Streets model, prioritising pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users, and street vendors alongside vehicular traffic, with a focus on creating vibrant public spaces rather than just traffic corridors.
The project includes 5.3 km of accessible footpaths, 15.7 km of cycle lanes, 250 vending spaces, 40 rain and sun shelters, 10 public toilets, and 36 water ATMs. With zero tree cutting, more than 3,633 new trees will be planted, along with 54 rainwater harvesting pits, improved drainage, LED street lighting, landscaping, and upgraded junctions. Universal accessibility will be ensured through kerb ramps, tactile paving, zebra crossings, and tabletop crossings.
Implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model, the project will guarantee high-quality construction and long-term maintenance. Key corridors, including Sherpur Chowk to Jagraon Bridge, Model Town Road, and Gill Canal Bridge to Gill Village, will feature unique designs reflecting Ludhiana’s identity. Minister Arora said the project will reduce congestion, improve road safety, support local businesses, and position Ludhiana as a leading example of urban development in North India.
