Zakir Khan Announces Break From Stand-Up Comedy to Focus on Health

Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Zakir Khan recently sparked concern among fans after a video of him announcing a break from comedy went viral on social media. Citing health reasons, Khan said he has decided to step away from regular performances to prioritise his well-being, a move that left many of his followers disappointed but concerned.

The news spread rapidly online, with fans expressing shock at what appeared to be a sudden decision. However, the comedian had hinted at this break much earlier. Khan had first spoken about slowing down his comedy commitments in September 2025, indicating that the decision was not impulsive but the result of prolonged reflection.

Addressing questions about his health, Zakir Khan openly spoke about long-standing medical issues, some of which are genetic. He explained that certain health conditions run in his family and tend to surface after a particular age, making it necessary for him to be more cautious now. He also admitted that years of overworking had taken a toll on his body, recalling how he often survived on just two hours of sleep before meeting large crowds and performing shows immediately after landing in new cities.

Khan said the pressure to keep going stemmed from a deep sense of responsibility. As the first in his family to achieve such large-scale success, he felt compelled to secure a better future not only for himself but also for coming generations. This mindset pushed him to prioritise work for nearly a decade, a phase he now believes has negatively impacted his health.

Reflecting on the consequences of such a demanding lifestyle, the comedian said that continuously pushing oneself at full speed for ten years inevitably damages the body. While he initially believed he could balance work and health, he realised during a tour in the United States last year that maintaining both was no longer possible. That realisation, he said, ultimately led to his decision to take a break.

Addressing speculation that he would stay away from stand-up comedy until 2030, Zakir Khan clarified that the comment had been misunderstood. He explained that he was referring specifically to returning to Hyderabad after resuming work, not to a complete absence from comedy for several years. He stressed that his break would not be as long as being suggested online.

Reaffirming his deep love for stand-up comedy, Khan said he intends to work on his health so that he can continue performing for decades to come. He added that he hopes to still be doing stand-up even at the age of 80, and taking care of his health now is essential to make that possible.
