Mumbai: Renowned actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his effortless humor and unforgettable performances across television and cinema, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon. He was 74.

According to reports, Shah breathed his last around 2:30 p.m. at Hinduja Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for kidney-related complications. The veteran actor had recently undergone a kidney transplant but succumbed to health issues.

His manager confirmed the news, stating that the actor’s body remains at the hospital and that the funeral will be held on Sunday.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Satish Shah carved a niche for himself as one of India’s most versatile and beloved performers. From his breakout performance in the 1983 cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro to his unforgettable turn as the witty and mischievous Indravadan Sarabhai in the television sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Shah’s work left an indelible imprint on generations of viewers.

He was equally admired for his memorable appearances in popular Hindi films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Main Hoon Na, and Om Shanti Om, among many others. His ability to move seamlessly between humor, satire, and emotion made him a constant presence in Indian entertainment from the 1980s through the 2000s.

Shah first gained nationwide recognition in the 1984 sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, one of Indian television’s earliest and most loved comedy shows. However, it was his role as the sarcastic patriarch in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai that turned him into a pop-culture icon, earning him admiration for his impeccable comic timing and natural charm.

Tributes began pouring in from colleagues, filmmakers, and fans soon after the news broke. Many described him as a “true gentleman” and “a legend of laughter.”

The Indian entertainment industry has lost not only a veteran actor but also a performer who helped define the golden era of sitcoms and comedy in Bollywood. Satish Shah’s passing marks the end of an era — one built on wit, warmth, and unforgettable laughter.
