Chandigarh: A disturbing incident of alleged animal cruelty has surfaced from Chandigarh, where a puppy reportedly died after being thrown into a burning tandoor outside a roadside eatery in Bapu Dham Colony. Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the person responsible.
The incident was reported during the early hours of May 16 near Noorani Dhaba in Phase 2 of Sector 26’s Bapu Dham Colony. Based on a complaint filed by local resident Sanjay Kumar, Chandigarh Police registered a case against unidentified individuals under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
According to the complaint, Sanjay Kumar, who works at the vegetable market in Sector 26, was heading home late at night when he noticed a man carrying a puppy near the Sampark Centre. Moments later, he allegedly saw the individual toss the animal into the blazing tandoor placed outside the dhaba before fleeing the spot.
The complainant said he immediately rushed to rescue the puppy and somehow managed to pull it out. However, the animal had suffered severe burns and had died by the time it was removed. The puppy was later buried near Sukhna Choe in the colony area.
Police officials confirmed that an FIR was formally registered at Sector 26 Police Station and further investigation is underway. Authorities are scanning surveillance footage from the locality and collecting other evidence to establish the accused’s identity.
The incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare groups and residents. Activists described the act as deeply inhuman and demanded strict punishment for those involved.
Representatives of Chandigarh People for Animals said they are working closely with investigators and monitoring the case to ensure swift action. They stressed that violence against animals reflects a serious social concern and should be dealt with firmly to prevent such incidents in the future.
Police said efforts are being intensified to identify and arrest the accused at the earliest.
