Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough, the Punjab Police have arrested the two primary suspects involved in the grenade blast outside the Punjab BJP headquarters in Chandigarh. According to official sources, the arrested individuals have been identified as Amanpreet Singh and Gurtej Singh. Preliminary investigations reveal that Amanpreet Singh was the one who allegedly lobbed the grenade at the facility, while Gurtej Singh recorded the act on video. A pistol was also recovered from their possession during the operation.

The blast, which occurred on the evening of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, caused significant damage to nearby vehicles and left shrapnel marks on the surrounding walls. This latest development follows a series of coordinated raids by Chandigarh and Punjab Police, which had previously led to the detention of five other associates: Balwinder Lal (alias Shammi), Jasvir Singh (alias Jassi), Charanjit Singh (alias Channi), Rubal Chauhan, and Mandeep (alias Abhijot Sharma).

ISI-backed cross-border conspiracy unearthed

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that the entire operation was a meticulously planned conspiracy orchestrated by handlers based in Portugal and Germany. The investigation has established a direct link between the attackers and Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, which reportedly sought to incite anarchy and disrupt the peace in Punjab.

  • Organized Module: The suspects were part of a sophisticated network where specific roles, ranging from logistics to execution and digital documentation, were assigned to different members.

  • Foreign Handlers: The Punjab Police have successfully identified the overseas handlers who were managing the module via encrypted communication channels.

  • Khalistani Links: The arrests come in the wake of a viral social media post in which a Khalistani outfit initially claimed responsibility for the strike.

DGP Yadav emphasized that the Punjab Police remain on high alert to neutralize any further threats from cross-border terror modules. The arrested duo is currently being interrogated to uncover the full extent of the network and identify any remaining sleeper cells operating within the region. Security has been significantly beefed up around political offices and sensitive installations in Chandigarh and Punjab following the breakthrough.
