Chandigarh: A young man was brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight in Chandigarh on Friday, triggering panic in the area. The victim, who was riding an Activa scooter, was attacked with knives by unidentified assailants and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
According to police, the incident took place near a petrol pump close to the BJP office in Sector 37. Upon receiving information, police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured man to Sector 16 Government Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The deceased has been identified as Sumit, a resident of Maulijagran in Chandigarh. Police said Sumit was out on bail in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He had got married just two weeks ago, family members told investigators.
The victim’s family alleged that a man from Dadumajra Colony had been threatening Sumit for the past year. Police are examining this angle as part of the investigation.
Eyewitnesses said that two youths arrived on a motorcycle, reportedly a Bullet, both wearing helmets. One of them was armed with a sharp weapon. They attacked Sumit with knives, inflicting multiple stab wounds on his back and other parts of the body.
Due to excessive blood loss, Sumit fell off his Activa around 50 metres away from the attack spot. He reportedly removed his helmet and tried to flee but collapsed after taking barely 20 steps.
Police recovered the victim’s Activa scooter and shoes from the scene. A case has been registered, and teams have been formed to identify and arrest the attackers. Further investigation is underway.
