Chandigarh: The Punjab State Women Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of two separate songs that have sparked outrage online for allegedly using offensive and derogatory language against women.

In two formal notices issued under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, the Commission has flagged concerns over songs sung by popular artists Karan Aujla and Yo Yo Honey Singh, both of which have been widely circulated on social media platforms.

The first notice pertains to Karan Aujla’s track “MF GABRU”, which the Commission claims includes language that is highly objectionable and disrespectful towards women. According to the Commission, the song’s lyrics undermine the dignity and rights of women and could potentially promote harmful attitudes in society.

Similarly, a second notice addresses the song “MILLIONAIRE” by Yo Yo Honey Singh, which has also come under scrutiny for allegedly containing inappropriate content targeting women.

Calling both instances a serious violation of women’s rights and dignity, the Commission has directed the Punjab Police Headquarters in Chandigarh to conduct an immediate inquiry and take appropriate legal action. The investigating officers have been instructed to submit a status report on the action taken in each case.

Furthermore, both singers have been summoned to appear before the Commission. Karan Aujla has been asked to present himself at the Commission’s office on August 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM, while Yo Yo Honey Singh has been called in half an hour later, at 11:30 AM on the same day.

The Punjab State Women’s Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding the rights, status, and safety of women in the state. The body emphasized that it takes such matters very seriously and will not tolerate the normalization of disrespectful or harmful portrayals of women in popular media.

The controversy has stirred public debate around accountability in the music industry and the need for greater sensitivity in lyrical content, especially in an era of widespread digital consumption.
