Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh): A somber atmosphere enveloped Devi Ka Nagla village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district after the bodies of two young girls were discovered in a water-filled pit on Sunday morning. The children, aged between five and seven, had gone missing while playing near their homes on Saturday evening, police officials said.

According to authorities, the girls were cousins — daughters of two brothers, Mukesh and Omveer — who reside in the Dibai area. When the children did not return home, their families alerted the police, prompting an extensive overnight search involving teams from multiple police stations and senior officers.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Tejveer Singh confirmed that the bodies were found early Sunday in a field just outside the village. “Initial investigation suggests the girls may have accidentally slipped into the water-filled pit and drowned while playing,” he said.

The discovery has left the village in shock, with grief-stricken family members mourning the loss of the two cousins. The site of the incident, a partially dug agricultural pit filled with rainwater, has since been cordoned off as a precautionary measure.

Police have registered a case at Dibai Police Station based on the family’s complaint. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

“The investigation is ongoing. While it appears to be a tragic accident, we are awaiting the autopsy report for confirmation,” ASP Singh added.

Local residents have urged authorities to cover or drain similar open pits in the area to prevent such incidents in the future. The district administration has assured that safety inspections will be conducted in surrounding villages.

As the community comes to terms with the tragedy, the families of the victims have demanded stricter measures to prevent avoidable accidents, describing the loss as “an unimaginable heartbreak.”
