Kottayam (Kerala): Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from West Bengal for allegedly murdering his wife and burying her body near an under-construction house in Ayarkunnam.

The accused, identified as Soni SK, a native of Dharapara in Murshidabad district, worked as a construction labourer in the area. He was detained from a railway station in Ernakulam while attempting to flee to his hometown with his two children.

According to police, Soni allegedly killed his wife Alpana Khathoon (28) on October 14 by strangling her and hitting her with an iron rod. He later buried her body near the construction site where the couple had been working.

Soni initially filed a missing complaint on October 17, claiming his wife had disappeared after visiting the market with him. Police grew suspicious after he reported her disappearance three days late and failed to cooperate during questioning. CCTV footage also showed no trace of the woman in the area.

Upon interrogation, Soni confessed to the murder, stating he acted on suspicion of his wife’s alleged extramarital affair. Police recovered the body from the burial site after he led them to the location.

Soni’s arrest was formally recorded after the recovery, and he will be produced before the court as part of the remand process, officials confirmed.
