New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Thursday announced a 20 per cent decline in PCR calls related to street crimes across the Southeast district, crediting the improvement to intensified night patrolling, vehicle checks, and stronger on-ground policing.

Under Operation Aaghat 2.0, launched on Wednesday under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Jain and led by DCP Hemant Tiwari, more than 600 police personnel were deployed in a coordinated crackdown on organised crime, habitual offenders, bootleggers, and drug peddlers.

Officials said nearly 500 individuals were apprehended, including 130 accused under the Arms Act, Delhi Excise Act, NDPS Act, and Public Gambling Act, while 360 others were detained under preventive measures. Among those arrested were 64 identified ‘bad characters’ with previous records of street crimes.

The police recovered 31 weapons, 5,826 quarters of illicit liquor, 5.5 kg of ganja, and ₹1.85 lakh from gambling dens. In addition, 163 vehicles were impounded under Section 66 of the Delhi Police Act.

DCP Tiwari said Operation Aaghat, first conducted on September 20, will now be held monthly to disrupt organised criminal networks and deter repeat offenders. “Compared to Aaghat 1.0, more gambling dens were busted and 524 people were booked under preventive action this time,” he said.

The police emphasized that focused operations in crime-prone areas and jhuggi clusters are being carried out to ensure a safe festive season. They added that strict provisions under Sections 111 and 112 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) will be invoked in cases linked to organised crime, while externment proposals are being prepared against habitual offenders.
