Standoff Continues in Haryana ADGP Y Puran Kumar Death Case as Family Rejects BJP Ministers, Denies Police Laptop Access

Chandigarh: The impasse over the postmortem and final rites of Haryana Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar deepened on Monday as his family stood resolute in demanding the arrest of senior officers named in the FIR. The late officer’s widow, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, refused to meet BJP ministers visiting their residence and declined to hand over Kumar’s laptop to the Chandigarh Police, citing mistrust in the ongoing investigation.

Y Puran Kumar was found dead at his home in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on October 7. His body remains at the Advanced Autopsy Centre of PGIMER, transferred there from GMSH-16, as tensions mount over the delay in conducting the postmortem and proceeding with the final rites.

During a tense encounter with political visitors, an emotionally distressed Amneet Kumar, accompanied by her brother, Punjab AAP MLA Amit Rattan Kotfatta, openly rebuffed BJP ministers who came to express condolences. “What have you done so far? What do you want to say? We don’t want anything from you. What have you done for my late husband? If the government wants, it may take his body as well,” she declared firmly.

The family has reiterated that they will not allow either the postmortem or cremation until their demand for the immediate arrest of Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, suspended Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, and other officials named in the FIR is fulfilled.

The Chandigarh Police had requested access to the late officer’s laptop to examine digital evidence, including a “final note” allegedly written and emailed by Kumar, which forms the basis of the FIR filed on October 9 at Sector 11 police station. The note reportedly contains serious accusations against senior Haryana police officers.

However, the family has refused to hand over the laptop, expressing concerns over potential mishandling and lack of transparency in the investigation.

Police officials have warned that the delay in conducting the postmortem could affect crucial forensic evidence. “Vital forensic markers such as gunpowder residue and ballistic analysis could degrade over time, which may weaken the evidentiary value of the case,” an investigating officer noted.

Meanwhile, the family received visits from several political leaders who offered their sympathies. Among those who called on the grieving family on Monday were Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, Punjab Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

As the standoff persists, the demand for justice and accountability remains at the forefront, with no resolution in sight over the investigation or the officer’s final rites.
