Jalandhar: A tragic accident took place in Punjab’s Jalandhar district on Sunday morning when a speeding truck lost control and rammed into a family standing by the roadside. The accident claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl, while her family members narrowly escaped with minor injuries.
The deceased was identified as Romanpreet Kaur (16), a resident of Mahiṭpur and a Class 10 student. She was waiting for a bus with her family at the Singoowal bus stop after finishing shopping, when a truck loaded with sand (registration number PB 02 BV 8387) heading towards Jagraon went out of control and hit them.
According to witnesses, the truck swerved suddenly while trying to avoid deep potholes on the road, resulting in the collision. Romanpreet sustained critical injuries and died on the spot, while her family members escaped by moving aside in time.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver, identified as Ram Singh, a resident of Khukrain village under Kotwali police station, Kapurthala, was under the influence of alcohol. However, Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Kashmir Singh stated that a medical test found no traces of alcohol in the driver’s system.
Police have taken the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination, while further investigation is underway.
