Bhopal: A 22-year-old BTech student, Udit Gaayke, died early Friday after being allegedly beaten by police personnel in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, officials said. A video circulating online shows one policeman holding Gaayke while another strikes him with a stick.
Bhopal Zone 2 DCP Vivek Singh confirmed that constables Santosh Bamaniya and Saurabh Arya have been suspended, and further action will follow once the post-mortem report is completed. Gaayke was rushed to a hospital by friends, where doctors declared him dead.
According to his friends, they were at a gathering in Indrapuri the previous night. Around 1:30 am, while dropping Gaayke home, he reportedly spotted police and ran into an alley. The two constables allegedly pursued and assaulted him. Witnesses claimed Gaayke was later found with a torn shirt and multiple bruises, and that the policemen demanded Rs 10,000 to stop the assault.
“Details will be clear after the post-mortem report is received. Statements of family members are being recorded, and the case is being probed by a City Superintendent of Police-level officer,” DCP Singh said.
An official noted that Gaayke’s parents work in Bhopal, while his brother-in-law serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Balaghat district.
