Arvind Kejriwal Allotted New Bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi, Joins Political Elite in Lodhi Estate

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has been officially allotted a government residence in Delhi, nearly a year after stepping down as Chief Minister. The new home, located in the high-security Lodhi Estate area, places him among several prominent political figures — including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who lives right next door.

The Directorate of Estates confirmed the allocation of bungalow number 95 in Lodhi Estate, a Type VII government accommodation, known for its spacious layout and large lawn areas. These bungalows are typically reserved for senior politicians, judges, or top bureaucrats. The property spans around 5,000 square feet and includes four bedrooms, an office area, garage space, and separate quarters for staff.

The allotment follows a petition by Kejriwal in the Delhi High Court, where he requested a residence befitting his role as the head of a nationally recognised political party. The Centre had informed the court that such an allotment would be made within the standard timeframe, which has now been fulfilled.

Interestingly, the AAP had initially sought 35 Lodhi Estate, a bungalow previously occupied by BSP leader Mayawati. However, that address had already been assigned to Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary earlier this year, prompting the shift to the adjacent property at number 95.

Kejriwal’s new neighbours include not just Shashi Tharoor at 97, but also key political and defence figures. Senior Army officers occupy nearby bungalows, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Misa Bharti reside close by at numbers 81 and 82 respectively.

Since resigning as Delhi CM on September 17, 2024, Kejriwal had been without an official residence. He vacated his former Chief Minister’s house at 6, Flagstaff Road on November 4 last year, moving temporarily to a property owned by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal at Ferozeshah Road.

That Flagstaff Road residence had previously attracted public scrutiny over renovation expenses. According to sources, the Delhi government now plans to convert the property into a state guest house with a cafeteria, giving it a new functional role.

The latest allocation settles months of speculation over Kejriwal’s housing status and marks his re-entry into Lutyens’ Delhi — an area synonymous with political power and influence.
