Leh: Activist Sonam Wangchuk announced on Thursday that he would end his hunger strike in Leh, following violent protests over the demand for statehood for Ladakh. Immediately after the demonstrations escalated, Wangchuk appealed for calm, urging residents to stop the violence and warning that such actions could undermine their cause.

Tensions erupted as large crowds clashed with police, with protestors pelting stones and law enforcement responding with teargas and baton charges to control the situation.

The protests were held to demand accelerated discussions with the central government regarding the extension of the Sixth Schedule and the proposed grant of statehood to Ladakh.
