Kutch Records Back-to-Back Tremors, Officials Confirm Safety

Kutch, Gujarat: Kutch district in Gujarat experienced mild tremors on Sunday, though no damage to life or property was reported.

According to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), a 3.1 magnitude tremor struck at 12:41 p.m., with its epicentre located about 12 kilometres north-northeast of Bhachau. Earlier in the day, at 6:41 a.m., the district had also recorded a 2.6 magnitude tremor, with its epicentre 24 kilometres east-southeast of Dholavira.

District disaster management officials confirmed that both tremors passed without incident. However, the region’s seismic vulnerability continues to remain a concern. Kutch lies in a “very high risk” seismic zone, where low-intensity earthquakes occur frequently.

The district carries a painful memory of the devastating 2001 earthquake, the third-largest in India’s recorded history, which killed nearly 13,800 people and injured over 1.67 lakh. Entire towns and villages were reduced to rubble in that disaster, marking one of the country’s worst tragedies in recent centuries.
