New Delhi: Australia has expanded biometric requirements for certain visa applicants in India from October 26, 2026, introducing fingerprint and facial image collection as part of measures to strengthen the security and integrity of its migration system.
The new requirements apply to visa applications lodged on or after October 26. According to a media release issued by the Australian High Commission in India, the changes will not affect visas that have already been granted or applications submitted before the deadline.
Who Needs To Provide Biometrics For An Australian Visa?
The Australian Department of Home Affairs will inform applicants if they are required to submit biometric information. Notifications will generally be sent by email, either directly to applicants or through their authorised migration agents.
The department will also provide instructions explaining how applicants should complete the process. Applicants have been advised to wait for an official biometric requirement letter before booking an appointment or attempting to use the Australian Immi App.
Depending on their circumstances, applicants may be asked to visit one of the 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres operating across India and managed by VFS Global. Eligible applicants may also be able to submit their biometrics through the Australian Immi App.
Why Has Australia Expanded Biometric Collection?
The Australian Government said the expanded programme was intended to improve identity verification, reduce fraud and protect legitimate visa applicants from identity misuse.
Biometric information provides an additional way to confirm an applicant’s identity and supports the integrity of Australia’s migration system. The government said the move would also help maintain a secure and trusted visa process as travel, education, employment and other connections between Australia and India continue to grow.
Australia already collects biometric information from visa applicants in nearly 60 countries. Extending the programme to India brings its arrangements in the country into line with established international practices, while allowing eligible applicants to use a digital option.
Will The New Rules Delay Australian Visa Processing?
The Australian Government does not expect the expanded biometric requirements to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete the process promptly after receiving their notification.
Applicants should therefore monitor their email for instructions from the Department of Home Affairs and follow the specified procedure. They should not book a biometric appointment or attempt to use the app before receiving confirmation that biometrics are required.
How Will Applicants’ Biometric Data Be Protected?
According to the Australian High Commission’s release, biometric information will be managed under Australian legislation and applicable local laws. Personal information will be processed and transmitted through encrypted channels, with safeguards intended to ensure it is handled securely and lawfully.
Applicants have also been advised to follow instructions issued by the Department of Home Affairs and use official websites when arranging biometric collection. Optional services offered by service providers will not affect visa processing times or determine the outcome of a visa application.
