Aichi-Nagoya [Japan]: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan entered the record books on Saturday by becoming only the second cricketer from the nation to breach the 1,000-run mark in Twenty20 Internationals within a single calendar year. The milestone was achieved during the Asian Games gold medal fixture against arch-rivals Pakistan in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Kishan contributed a measured 20 runs off 18 deliveries, hitting three boundaries, following his decisive unbeaten 80 from 46 balls in the semi-final encounter against Sri Lanka. The left-hander’s productive campaign has yielded 1,005 T20I runs at an average of 37.22 and a strike rate of 169.47, a haul that includes one century and seven half-centuries, headlined by an individual high score of 103.
The feat places him in exclusive company alongside middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav, who was the first Indian to achieve the distinction when he amassed 1,164 runs across 31 T20I matches in 2022. Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan continues to hold the benchmark among Full Member nations with 1,326 runs recorded in 2021, while Austria’s Karanbir Singh holds the overall international record following his 1,488-run haul across 32 fixtures in 2025.
In the final, India elected to bat upon winning the toss and recovered briskly from the early dismissal of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Abhishek Sharma provided early impetus with an aggressive 61 off 28 balls, laced with seven sixes and three fours. Stable middle-order contributions from Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer allowed Tilak Varma, who compiled an unbeaten 51 off 22 balls, and Shivam Dube, who added 27 not out from 15 deliveries, to execute an explosive 62-run sixth-wicket partnership that carried India to a formidable total of 211 for 6.
