New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, conveying condolences over the recent loss of lives during violent protests and pledging India’s continued support.

In a post on X, Modi described the exchange as a “warm conversation” and said he reaffirmed India’s commitment to assist Nepal in restoring peace and stability. He also extended greetings to Nepal on the eve of its National Day.

“Had a warm conversation with Mrs Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” Modi wrote.

The development comes days after widespread unrest shook Nepal, with protests led by the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9 forcing the resignation of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and bringing Karki, a former chief justice, to head the interim government.

During the demonstrations, protesters set fire to government buildings, political leaders’ residences, and commercial establishments in Kathmandu. While violence had gripped the capital, security forces have since restored order, and normal activity resumed midweek with people and vehicles returning to the streets.

In response to the unrest, the Nepal Cabinet declared September 17 a public holiday and a National Day of Mourning to honor those who lost their lives. Authorities also announced plans to build a “Gen-Z Memorial Park.” Prime Minister Karki has declared those killed in the protests as martyrs.
