Phagwara: Authorities have suspended internet services indefinitely across the Lovely Professional University campus in Phagwara following widespread unrest and violence. The precautionary shutdown was enforced by law enforcement and district administration to curb the circulation of inflammatory videos and prevent the spread of rumours that could further escalate tensions within the university perimeters.
Taking stern cognizance of the unrest, the Punjab State Women’s Commission intervened by summoning a comprehensive status report from the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner and the Senior Superintendent of Police. The commission has demanded copies of registered First Information Reports, details concerning the formation of the Special Investigation Team, and findings gathered so far. In addition, the panel sought a detailed review of current security measures established across female student hostels on the premises.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed the developments, assuring that stringent legal measures will be initiated against those found responsible for the violence. Acting on governmental directives, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav conducted an on-site visit to inspect security deployments, assess the law-and-order situation, and oversee ongoing investigations.
In the wake of the disturbance, university administration declared a temporary 10-day shutdown of academic operations. Ongoing mid-term examinations were promptly cancelled across all faculties. The institution advised students wishing to vacate the campus to coordinate with their families, prompting hundreds of residential scholars to leave hostels and return home under heightened police watch.
